Color Butterfly Valley Scenic Area】

Color Butterfly Valley is part of the Hongshuei River Valley in Liouguei Township near Hongshueikeng ( 洪水坑 ) Village. Large number of teak and kassod trees are planted within this area. Spectacular migration of migrant butterflies happens annually from May till October. The best time to observe these butterflies is from 8 to 10 in the morning of any sunny day. The places in the valley to stroll and to observe butterflies are the several delicately constructed courtyards with pathways connecting in-between sitting behind the Jiuhuashan ( 九華山 ) Monumental Archway, where buildings of Buddhist Tiyuen Monastery ( 諦願寺 ) scatter around the valley, enshrining Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. One round trip is 4.8 Km , passing through the Kunlun Bridge.

The Tree of Lovers ( 情人樹 ) Mountain-Climbing Trail, a 20-minute walk for about 0.84 km , is the place to view the vast Laonong River Valley. After passing through a forest, its entrance is by the Jianming Hills ( 澗鳴山莊 ). It is however more difficult to walk through during the rainy season. The spectacle here is the two 27-m-tall large-leaf banyan trees, aged around 150 years, meeting in the air and then branching outward, shaped like two embracing lovers. Their roots weave together, covering an area exceeding 330 m 2 . It is said that lovers who vow to each other with words of love would be blessed by the tree spirits if both of them walked through the arch created by these two trees.

Another place to view the Laonong River Valley and the Southern Cross-Island Mountain Ranges is the 4.2-km Meilun Mountain Mountain-Climbing Trail, a forest trail for industrial use and a 1- to 1.5-hour walk. Its entrance is the monumental archway of Cihyoukong ( 慈祐宮 ) temple. One of the popular routes is to walk up to the tea garden at the hill top. Keeping going towards the trig point of Meilun Mountain, the mountain trail is shaded by the thick forest, and to go through it requires to be lead by a guide. Some of the slopes are steeper than the others and it takes 1 to 2 hour(s) to reach the trig point at the summit of the mountain. This walking tour back and forth, taking about 4 to 6 hours, is a full day climbing route and more rigorous. Any visitor should decide which point to return according to his/her own physical strength.

Pulaisitoushe ( 浦來溪頭社 ) Battle Road Trail is a 3-km long path within 1-hr walking distance. Visitor parking is available at the parking lot by Fulongkong ( 福龍宮 ) behind the Baolai Elementary School or in the Hot Spring Hills ( 溫泉山莊 ). There is a story about the origin of this battle road trail . The village of the natives, the Pulaisitoushe people, was located here 2000 to 400 years ago. During the Japanese colonial period, the Japanese climbed to the summit of the Baolai Mountain peak following the crest line here and constructed the Meilongshan ( 美瓏山 ) Fort there to monitor the activities of the natives. This trail was thus called the battle road trail. This route is esoteric with cool air blowing. Mango orchards and bamboo forests are along the path. There are plum trees planted along the slope of the later half section of this path. Two small paths penetrate through these plum trees leading upwards to the crest line. Northern lava rock, Tongsih ( 通寺 ) Temple and the Cilisiangsih ( 七里相思 ) Forest Trail can be observed from the crest line. Looking towards the west end from here, the panoramic view of the hot spring area is present.

【Southern Cross-Island Highway 】

The Taluoliou River, “tatapara” in Tsou language, meaning rich with water plants, runs below the Cueigu Bridge, Gaojhong Village, Taoyuan Township. Fishing is prohibited and the community here is responsible for the conservation of fish. There are three sections, ie. the a section, the b section and the c section, of routes available for tourism. The a section starts from the entrance, where there are 300-m long pavement built for fish conservation and gazebos constructed in wood. Large herds of fish can easily be seen here. The b section is toward the head stream, including the graceful Patriarch Bodhidharma Waterfall. The naming of this place was inspired by the naturally formed rock, shaped like a typical Patriarch Bodhidharma figure carving, extending out of the waterfall. The c section, going even more upstream for another 40-minute walk, an even more imposing waterfall awaits there, called the Diamond Waterfall . The b and c sections are difficult routs with some extremely steep slopes. Arrangement of a guide with the local community organization is advised.
